9 Botanical Powders in Our Soaps — And What Each One Does for Your Skin

Last week I introduced you to the 9 natural clays we use in our handcrafted soaps. This week it's time for Part 2 — the botanical powders.

If the clays are the mineral foundation of our soaps, the botanical powders are the superfoods. These are ingredients sourced from plants, algae, spices, and ancient Ayurvedic traditions — each one packed with compounds that do something specific and meaningful for your skin.

Some of them you'll recognize. Others might surprise you. All of them were chosen on purpose.

1. Activated Charcoal — The Deep Pore CleanserFound in: Regular soaps + face soapsBest for: Oily, acne-prone, and congested skin

Activated charcoal is one of the most powerful natural cleansing ingredients available. It works through a process called adsorption — where toxins, dirt, excess oil, and impurities are attracted to the charcoal's surface and literally pulled out of your pores when you rinse. Think of it as a magnet for everything that shouldn't be on your skin.

In soap, activated charcoal deep cleanses without stripping your skin's natural oils, helps reduce acne and blackheads, and leaves skin feeling genuinely clean — not just surface clean. It's especially effective in face soaps where pore congestion is the main concern.

And that dramatic black color in a charcoal soap bar? Completely natural. No dyes, no pigments — just the charcoal itself.

2. Chlorella — The Skin SuperfoodFound in: SoapsBest for: Dull, aging, and sun-damaged skin

Chlorella is a single-celled green algae — and one of the most nutrient-dense organisms on the planet. It's packed with vitamin C, protein, and collagen-building compounds that support skin elasticity and help reduce the appearance of fine lines.

As a skincare ingredient, chlorella brings powerful antioxidant protection — defending skin from the UV damage and environmental pollution that cause dark spots and uneven tone. It supports cell renewal, promotes an even complexion, and gives skin a natural brightness that comes from genuine nourishment rather than surface coverage.

It also gives our soaps that gorgeous deep green color you see in our chlorella bars — completely natural, straight from the algae.

3. Turmeric Powder — The Ancient BrightenerFound in: Regular soaps + face soapsBest for: Dull skin, dark spots, and acne-prone skin

Turmeric has been used in skincare for thousands of years across India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Its active compound, curcumin, is one of the most studied natural anti-inflammatory ingredients in the world — and its effects on skin are significant.

In soap, turmeric helps brighten skin tone, fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation, reduce acne-causing bacteria, and calm redness and inflammation. It regulates excess oil production without stripping the skin — which makes it particularly effective in face soaps for combination and acne-prone skin.

One honest note: turmeric can temporarily leave a very slight yellow tint on skin or the rim of your bathtub if it isn't rinsed thoroughly. A quick wipe takes care of it — and the skin benefits are absolutely worth it.

4. Alfalfa Powder — The Collagen SupporterFound in: SoapsBest for: Mature, dull, and environmentally-stressed skin

Alfalfa has a long history as a nutritional powerhouse — and its benefits extend to skincare. Rich in vitamins A, C, E, and K, as well as zinc and antioxidants, alfalfa powder supports collagen production in the skin, which is the protein responsible for keeping skin firm, plump, and youthful-looking.

It also provides natural detoxifying properties, helps reduce fine lines, and supports an even, radiant complexion. For mature skin or anyone dealing with environmental stressors like sun, wind, or pollution, alfalfa is a quiet but effective ingredient working in the background.

5. Moringa Powder — The Miracle TreeFound in: SoapsBest for: All skin types, especially aging and acne-prone

Moringa comes from the Moringa oleifera tree — widely called the "miracle tree" because of its extraordinary nutritional density. The leaves contain over 90 nutrients, 46 antioxidants, and all 9 essential amino acids. As a skincare ingredient, it brings this entire ecosystem of nourishment directly to your skin.

Moringa supports collagen production and skin elasticity, fights free radical damage that accelerates aging, helps regulate oil balance for both acne-prone and dry skin, and contains zeatin — a natural plant compound that promotes cellular longevity and stimulates fresh skin cell growth. It also helps cleanse pores and balance the skin's pH, leaving skin clear, refreshed, and genuinely nourished.

It's one of those ingredients that does almost everything well — which is why it's one of our favorites.

6. Amla Powder — The Ayurvedic SuperfruitFound in: Soaps + shampoo barsBest for: All skin types; strengthens hair and scalp

Amla — also known as Indian gooseberry — has been revered in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. It's considered one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C on earth, containing up to 20 times more than an orange. That extraordinary vitamin C content drives most of its skincare and haircare benefits.

On skin, amla provides powerful antioxidant protection, supports collagen production, brightens complexion, reduces acne and blackheads through its natural astringent and antiseptic properties, and helps combat premature aging. It soothes inflammation and redness and leaves skin looking clearer and more even-toned.

In our shampoo bars, amla truly shines. It strengthens hair follicles, reduces hair fall, fights dandruff, and leaves hair noticeably shinier and more nourished. It's been used for healthy hair in India for centuries — and for good reason.

7. Red Sandalwood Powder — The Complexion RefinerFound in: SoapsBest for: All skin types, especially oily and acne-prone

Red sandalwood — Pterocarpus santalinus — is a different species from the white sandalwood used in fragrance, and it has a distinct set of skin benefits. It's been used in South Asian beauty traditions for centuries, prized for its ability to refine and even the complexion.

Red sandalwood provides natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that help treat acne and reduce breakouts. It gently exfoliates dead skin cells, tightens pores, helps fade blemishes and dark spots, and improves overall skin texture. It also has a mild cooling effect on the skin — which is why it's been used historically to soothe heat-related skin irritation.

And that rich, warm reddish-brown color it gives the soap? Completely natural. Not a dye in sight.

8. Oatmeal — The Skin SootherFound in: Soaps + body lotionsBest for: Sensitive, dry, irritated, and eczema-prone skin

Of all the botanical powders we use, oatmeal might be the most universally beloved — and for good reason. It's one of the gentlest, most effective soothing ingredients in natural skincare, with a track record going back centuries.

Oatmeal contains compounds called avenanthramides — natural antioxidants unique to oats that specifically reduce skin itching, redness, and inflammation. It also forms a protective layer on the skin's surface that locks in moisture and shields against irritants. For sensitive, dry, or eczema-prone skin, it's one of the most reliable ingredients available.

In our soaps, finely ground oatmeal cleanses gently while soothing any irritation, making it ideal for daily use even on reactive skin. In our body lotions, it works alongside our other natural ingredients to keep skin soft, calm, and deeply moisturized. It's one of the ingredients we use most — and one our customers notice immediately.

9. Arrowroot Powder — The Silky Skin FinisherFound in: Body buttersBest for: All skin types, especially those who dislike greasy moisturizers

Arrowroot powder comes from the root of the Maranta arundinacea plant and is one of the best-kept secrets in natural body care. Its superpower is texture: it absorbs excess moisture and oil on the skin's surface, giving body butters and thick creams that light, non-greasy, silky-smooth finish that most people love but struggle to find in a natural product.

Without arrowroot, a rich body butter can feel heavy and take a long time to absorb. With it, the same formula glides on smoothly, absorbs quickly, and leaves skin feeling soft and velvety rather than coated. It's also a natural alternative to talc, gentle enough for sensitive skin, and completely non-toxic.

If you've ever tried our body butter and noticed how it melts in without feeling greasy — that's the arrowroot doing its job quietly in the background.
